SOMETHING strange is happening in Walmart megastores across the United States. For some reason customers are deciding it’s as good a place as any to cook up a bit of methamphetamine.

Police were called to an Indiana Walmart when staff discovered a functioning meth lab in a backpack left in the bathroom. If you can believe it, such a thing is not all that unusual for US police.

In December of 2011 a woman was arrested for cooking meth in a Walmart in Oklahoma after spending six hours trying to mix the drug. According to local media, the woman told police she needed to do it inside the store as she was unable to afford the chemical ingredients on their own.

Two months prior, a man was arrested in the exact same Walmart for having an active meth lab in his backpack. A month before that incident, two men were sentenced to lengthy prison sentences after a metal tank being used to cook meth exploded in a Walmart carpark in Nashville.

Carparks seem to be a popular site for would-be meth cooks in America’s mid west. In March 2012 police reportedly deactivated two meth labs located in a Jeep parked at a Walmart in Kentucky.

In the same year, a Walmart in St. Louis was shut down for three hours after a female shoplifter was found to be making meth in a bottle concealed in her purse.

To keep the trend going, in 2013, police were called to a Michigan Walmart after a van containing a live meth lab was discovered. Fortunately there were no explosions this time but three men were subsequently arrested.
